We’re all busy. We’re all time-poor and especially so when it comes to areas that may not be your core business. One specific area I’m talking about is social media and all the work that comes with it. Maintaining a consistent profile on Facebook, Twitter or whichever platform you’re using to reach your target market, is extremely important. A good way of maintaining consistency is to have regular updates. So you’ve (hopefully) planned out your updates for at least a week ahead and have a clear content plan in mind. But does this mean that you have to remember to log into all of your social media accounts everyday and enter your status updates? No. It doesn’t.

For those of you who are unaware, you don’t need to manually type in your Facebook updates everyday . There are programs out there that allow you to schedule your posts ahead of time. I manage a number of pages and generally schedule for my clients up to one to two weeks ahead. It’s very handy and saves me from having to remember that awesome post I thought of last week. It’s easy enough to schedule it straight away and ensures that my posts are evenly spread and at the times I want them posted.

I’ve tried a few different ways of scheduling my posts, and I’ve outlined my experience with them below:

Why I started using it

I did a lot of initial research before settling on Hootsuite. The main reason I chose Hootsuite was because it allowed me to update to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google+ all from their dashboard. I had to use their “Pro” package because I was managing more than five social profiles, but at US$9.99 per month, it’s hardly going to break the bank. Scheduling from Hootsuite was extremely easy. You typed in your update in one window, and simply clicked where you wanted it to post i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Linkedin. Simple! Different options are available at the right website for the benefit of the business people. The social media platform will offer the best results to the individuals for the growth and development. 

Why I stopped using it

Edgerank. That’s it. The gist of it is that I read a lot of articles about how Facebook tended to discriminate against posts scheduled through a third party such as Hootsuite, and I was determined to make the most of my status updates and increase my reach as much as possible.

I noticed a positive difference in my Insights once I stopped using Hootsuite, and I’m very happy with scheduling within Facebook. You are also able to link your Facebook and Twitter accounts so that you’re updating Facebook and Twitter at the same time.

Why I stopped using it

Well I haven’t. This is the one scheduling tool I always come back to, and for now this is what I’m sticking with. Needs and opinions will differ from person to person, but for my requirements I’ve found that Facebook does an excellent job. And it doesn’t cost a cent! BUT I remain open to other suggestions and am continually reading about other scheduling tools out there, which brings me to why I tried Postplanner even though I was happy with Facebook.

Why I started using it

Yes, I was happy scheduling within Facebook but as I said, I’m constantly educating myself on what’s out there in terms of tools and working smarter. I subscribe to Postplanner’s newsletters and they are one of the most informative and interesting reads that I get. They do a good job of selling Postplanner and the main reason I signed on was for their status ideas engine, which I thought would be very handy. This engine has thousands of suggestions for status updates and I thought it would be a good tool to have if I ever ran out of content for the pages I manage. I wasn’t sure if it would be worth the $19 per month subscription, but was happy to sign on, safe in the knowledge that I could always cancel my subscription.

Why I stopped using it

I have to be honest and tell you that I didn’t stick with Postplanner for very long. The problem was that I still wanted to schedule within Facebook because I liked the way it worked. Whilst Postplanner is an app that sits within your Facebook page (i.e. you don’t need to have an extra browser open), I preferred having all the updates scheduled in my client’s separate pages. But if I scheduled anything within Postplanner, all of my clients were grouped together within the Postplanner app. This isn’t such a big deal, but I didn’t realize how much I liked the Facebook schedule set-up until I started using another application.

Also, I didn’t find much value in the status update ideas database. After using it a couple of times, I thought that I could come up with these ideas on my own and not need to pay $19 per month for somebody else to do it for me. But at the moment I’m small fry. There are people out there managing over 100 pages and in this instance I can see the value in utilising Postplanner.
